Mitzvah Project Part II
On Saturday, April 14th Derrick hosted a Coastal Cleanup at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Nature Center on Key Biscayne. We had a small group due to bad weather, but we picked up about 3 garbage bags full. Strange things were found...yuck!

“All that we do is touched with ocean, yet we remain on the shore of what we know.”
- Richard Wilbur
At 13 a Jewish boy becomes a Bar Mitzvah, taking his place as a man in the Jewish Community. An important part is doing mitzvot (good deeds) and to do my part to "repair the world" (Tikkun Olam). My mitzvah project (service project) revolves around helping to save the ocean and the sea life in it.
I am doing this by raising awareness of the ways we can help marine conservation and by raising money for UM-RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program (Adopt-a-Shark).
The Adopt a Shark Program - They may not be cute and cuddly, but sharks add beauty and diversity to our planet’s oceans. Their populations are in decline and researching these predators is neither easy nor cheap. To ensure RJD’s satellite tracking study of sharks continues, I'd like to adopt a shark!
Once I raise $2,000 (the cost of tagging), a shark will be tagged for research. (I may even get to go on the boat while they tag "my" shark!).
How you can help:
o Buy a RESPECT (the shark!) wristband - all proceeds benefit Adopt-A-Shark (you can order below with PayPal or send me a check, and I will send them to you.)
o Join me at a Coastal Clean Up to be held on a Saturday, tentatively set for Spring (this is an event through Ocean Conservancy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Nature Center, Key Biscayne)
o Make a donation to the UM-RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program (Adopt-a-Shark). 2 ways:

A Quote from a Shark Attack Survivor"People often ask why we are fighting so hard to save sharks, especially after what we endured. We recognize that these top predators are key to healthy oceans and play a vital role in the food chain. And we repeat them. They are hunters doing what comes naturally. We just got in the way."
